Moving can be a stressful and expensive experience, but choosing the right professional movers can make all the difference in the outcome. The effort you spend selecting a company you know you can rely on will be well worth the effort. Follow these tips for finding a reputable North Miami moving service.

Start with collecting personal references from family members, friends, and business associates. A personal reference from someone you can trust is more valuable than any online review from someone you do not know. Ask about what went right and what went wrong to get a clear idea of the quality of service the company provides.

Look at the company’s website. The way a business presents itself online should be a good indication of the level of professionalism you can expect in its services. An unorganized site with misspellings and grammatical errors indicates a lack of attention to details. You do not want to turn over your valuable possessions to a company that lacks concern about its own image.

To narrow down your list of possibilities, do some background research on several companies. You want find companies that have been doing business in your area for several years. Check with the Better Business Bureau to determine if any of the companies you are considering have unresolved complaints against them. Verify that each company has a valid DOT and MC license.

Select a minimum of three companies and call to make an appointment for an in-home estimate. Do not hire any company that insists on giving you an estimate over the phone. The only way to prepare an accurate estimate is for someone to inspect your home and its contents.

Ask the company about insurance. If you pack your own belongings, the mover’s insurance will not cover any damage caused by improper packing. If you pay the movers to pack your possessions, their insurance should cover any breakage. If your possessions receive damage due to neglect while loading the truck or an accident during transportation, the company is liable for a predetermined amount multiplied by the total weight but there is a cap. You can protect yourself further by purchasing relocation insurance from your current insurance provider.

A bill of lading is a binding contract between the moving company and the customer. The document should include the mover’s name and address, the time of pickup, the agreed upon price, and details about payment methods. Read the document carefully. Once you sign it, you are legally bound to its contents. Keep your copy in a safe place so you can access it easily if something goes wrong or the mover attempts to collect more than you agreed to.

Selecting a reputable moving company is no different from choosing any other service provider. Ask as many questions as you need to before you sign the contract. Always follow up on references and do a background check to ensure the company can deliver what it promises. With careful preparation ahead of time, your move will be less stressful and more productive.
